Tropical North Queensland has long been home to a thriving LGBT+ arts scene, some artists inspired by the reef and rainforest, some by the tropical light, others by the unique fauna and flora, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists inspired by their own ancient living cultures, immigrant artists inspired by their amazing new homeland, and, as everywhere, artists trying to make sense of this crazy world we live in.
TROPICAL GAZE, the annual Cairns Tropical Pride art exhibition, brings together an eclectic mix of artworks, mediums and styles from established and emerging LGBT+ artists in a community renowned for exciting and extravagant creations. Stimulate your senses with Tropical North Queensland's most exhilarating art. Also this year - “The Sealed Section” - a retrospective display of HIV/AIDS posters produced around Australia since the 1980’s; an extraordinary visual timeline of the HIV pandemic seen through educational posters created by remarkable artists.
And a special exhibition deserves a special space.
Tanks Arts Centre art gallery, Tank 4, is a far remove from conventional white-walled galleries with its oil-stained concrete walls and interior poles a unique backdrop for displaying art. And it's nestled beneath a rainforest-covered mountain in the heritage-listed Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct.
Invigorate your senses by combining a visit to Tropical Gaze art exhibition and the Cairns Botanic Gardens.
If you're feeling energetic the Red, Green and Blue Arrow walking tracks ascend the slopes of Mt Whitfield adjacent to the Tanks Arts Centre and offer magnificent views over the city and out to Green Island, while further up you can take in the vista along the coast to the north of Cairns.
